What is the proper decision on a bag at the store? Your own reusable bag is a top choice. Aside from there, your checkout clerk asks “Paper or Plastic?” Who is the better friend of the earth? The better environmentalist? For a long-time the ‘hip trend’ was that paper is biodegradable, easier to recycle, etc. Paper comes from trees. Which means trees are cut down for that bag. Most plastic bags in the U.S. are made from natural gas, which comes from the ground. Is there a right answer? Supporting the fossil fuel industry? It should be obvious that a true environmentalist would spare the logging of a tree for some natural gas out of the ground. More on the case for plastic here. And more on all the above here and here.
